Sounds like an ideal starting point for the simple elimination, entirely of the office of the Sheriff in every county in America.

That’s a naive thing to say. Do you think that a Board, made of between three to seven (or more) people, particularly in small jurisdictions, is going to go such a bang-up job picking someone to be police chief?

Are you saying that a police chief in those circumstances won’t be as susceptible to corruption and abuses of authority as a sheriff would?

Heck, there are plenty of examples otherwise.

As much as I dislike my local sheriff (I live in a jurisdiction of approximately 27,000), I would rather keep the sheriff system in place rather than have the six people that make up our Board of Supervisors (don’t get me started on them) pick someone as chief.

How could that possibly be any more legal than other measures under the constitution?

I would assume that he means to amend the Constitution of every state to remove the office of sheriff.

A structural change so very severe over a few bad apples may not be the best plan.

Concur. There are better ways to create the necessary oversight. I’d favor having a state create an office within its Department of Justice to conduct oversight of county sheriff’s departments.
